Over 30 Suspected Bandits Found Dead After Zamfara Attack

More than 30 suspected bandits have been found dead in farmlands around Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State after a failed attack on the town.
Police authorities in Zamfara confirmed the discovery on Saturday. The decomposing bodies were seen scattered across farms following a gunfight that happened days earlier.
The initial attack took place on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. Donjoe Media learnt that heavily armed men tried to invade Bukkuyum town in broad daylight. They came in large numbers and planned to overrun the community.
Security operatives on ground spotted the advancing bandits early. Combined teams of police and military quickly moved to block them. What followed was a long gun battle at the edge of the town.
The security forces engaged the bandits with superior firepower. The attackers lost control of the fight. Many were hit. The rest broke and fled into the surrounding bushes.
The troops repelled the invasion and prevented what could have been a mass killing inside Bukkuyum. The bandits retreated towards their forest hideouts.
Days later, the aftermath showed how deadly the encounter was. On Saturday, October 31, 2026, farmers who returned to their fields found bodies. They alerted the police immediately.
Officers visited the farms and counted over 30 bodies. The bodies had already started decomposing. Police said the men died from gunshot wounds sustained during the Wednesday clash.
The victims could not make it far after they were shot. Blood loss and lack of treatment killed them inside the bush. Their bodies littered the farmlands where they fell.
Zamfara State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the development at a weekend briefing. He said the dead were part of the group that attacked Bukkuyum on October 28.
According to him, joint security teams engaged the bandits and inflicted heavy casualties. He added that clearance operations are still ongoing across Bukkuyum LGA to fish out survivors who may be hiding with injuries.
Bukkuyum has been one of the hotspots for banditry in Zamfara. In February, a similar attack left at least 50 people dead in the area. Gunmen on over 150 motorcycles invaded a community, burnt houses and kidnapped women and children.
That history made Wednesday’s repulsion important for residents. Another successful invasion would have been catastrophic.
The discovery of bodies on farmlands also shows the risk farmers face daily. Many farmers now abandon fertile fields because bandits use them as escape routes. Food production in Zamfara has suffered because of this.
Police said they are combing forests and farmlands around Bukkuyum. The aim is to prevent reprisal attacks and to capture wounded bandits who escaped. Security presence has been increased in and around the town.
The command also asked residents to be vigilant. People were urged to report anyone seeking treatment for fresh gunshot wounds. Police said such persons could be fleeing members of the gang.
Residents said the security response on October 28 was quick and decisive. They said it restored some confidence after months of fear.
Federal operations in Zamfara have involved both ground troops and air support. The Nigerian Air Force has carried out strikes on forest camps in the state. Ground forces then move in to clear the areas.
Authorities said cutting off arms supply and ransom payments is also key. Bandits use ransom money to buy sophisticated rifles. Security agencies said they are tracking the networks that support them.
The Zamfara State Government has been coordinating relief for displaced persons. Many families fled their homes during previous attacks. Officials said efforts are ongoing to support them and to request more troop deployments.
For residents of Bukkuyum, the focus now is on recovery. Rebuilding homes and returning to farms will take time. But locals said the October 28 repulsion gave them hope.
Police said updates will be provided as clearance operations continue.
